In A.D. 9, a certain Arminius, the prince of the Cherusci, handed the Romans their most serious military defeat since the battle of Cannae. Roman legions under the command of P. Quinctilius Varus were ambushed somewhere in the Teutoburger Forest, which was a major setback for Rome's plans to expand into Germany.
