Java is one of the most popular programming languages and popular in teaching at universities. Despite its popularity Java software is rare for operating system related software. In the view of the tremendous performance offered by current desktop computers it is due to challenge what is still the domain of native C programs: filesystems. This thesis presents a Java wrapper of the FUSE lowlevel API (jlowfuse), which enables filesystem development using Java and a simple FUSE like API. Ontop of that a Java implementation of the second extended filesystem, called jext2, was done. Using jext2 and other, existing ext2 implementations, performance benchmarks were conducted to evaluate the posibilities of Java-based filesystems
